Soft Skills Training - How to Be More Assertive
Broken Co-Worker, is an interactive video that provides assertiveness training to help you deal with an office bully. As you play through the story, you help the hero, Sam, learn how to be more assertive as he deals with Emma, the workplace bully.
Assertive Communication at Work
Workplace bullying is a common problem that causes significant stress at work. Effective assertiveness training can help people learn to manage workplace conflict and be more productive. Interactive videos can make training more engaging and can help learning stick.
Broken Co-worker uses a series of scenarios and decisions to teach assertive communication. Here’s the first situation that Sam faces in the story. You decide what he’ll say by dragging and dropping a response into the empty square.
After each decision, Sam reflects on the consequence, which allows the player to develop self awareness about their own assertiveness at work. Here’s what you see if you choose a non-assertive response in the massage oil situation.
Then, if you choose a more assertive response to the Cancun pictures situation, you will see a more positive consequence, as shown below.
Interactive Video - A Powerful New Learning Medium
Interactive videos can use third person perspective similar to films to draw the audience into the learning experience. When you make decisions in Broken Co-worker, it feels like you’re helping Sam speak assertively to Emma. In reality, as you play through the story, you are developing your own social skills and emotional intelligence. By the end of the story, you will have had the opportunity to internalize assertive language and behavior yourself, so you can bring those more assertive interpersonal skills to your own workplace.
You’ll also see customized feedback based on each decision you made earlier.
Possible Impact on Organizational Behavior
Broken Co-worker uses the power of interactive storytelling to boost audience engagement. It’s very different from traditional elearning, which is often little more than an “click next” online reading experience.
Interactive videos can be used to gamify soft skills training. This can apply to a broad range of subjects including leadership skills, personal growth, and conflict resolution techniques. Because it’s highly effective as well as scaleable, this new medium can have a huge impact on individuals as well as on organizational behavior as a whole.
